PERSONALITY:
'Tell our fearless leader he should be able to handle one lone TIE fighter on his own' -Hera Syndulla, The Machine in the Ghost short
The Star Wars Rebels series presents Kanan as being the leader of the Specters, a ragtag group of rebels fighting against the Empire. While his training at the Jedi Temple as a youngling and padawan might have prepared him for a position of command, it becomes clear as the series progress that Kanan would have fall naturally onto that position. He exhibits several qualities that make up for a good leader. He inspires the best in his team, such as when Sabine chose to refrain herself from seeking revenge on the Mandalorian that severely injured Hera, their pilot, citing Kanan's Jedi wisdom as being a major, positive influence on her decision. Kanan is also an honorable man, as showing when he chose to save the old Clone troopers from being killed by the Empire for helping the rebels, even if the Jedi has every reason to hold prejudices against the former soldiers.
Reading one's character is something that Kanan does well too. For example, it is by being able to discern how one learns the quickest that Kanan mentors Ezra. His teaching methods are very different from the way he was himself taught by his master, but Kanan quickly figures out that normal training is not suited for his padawan and is quick on changing his way with Ezra.
Kanan is fairly well versed in strategy due to his past experience in the Clone Wars, and can quickly come up with a back-up plan when the Specters run into trouble, which happens quite often. This ability to think under pressure also lets him see the bigger picture more quickly, which often leads him to be reckless for the sake of the safety of his team. It is what drives him to let himself get capture during the first season, so the Specters could escape the Grand Inquisitor.
'Kid, I'm about to let everyone in on the secret' -Kanan Jarrus, Spark of Rebellion
Having to hide who he was most of his life in order to survive has made Kanan a very guarded man. Even with his team, he shares very little of his past, as illustrated in the first episode when he revealed himself to be a Jedi, surprising even his teammates (except for their pilot, Hera, who already knew of his Force-sensitivity). Even as the series progress, he never wears his lightsaber openly, nor often speaks of his master or his past experiences. At the start of the second season, after finding the retired Clone troopers during a mission, it takes Kanan some time before he chooses to share with Ezra why he doesn't trust the old soldiers, even though they were friends of Ahsoka, an ally of the Rebellion.
The enactment of Order 66 (often called the Jedi Purge) by the Clone troopers at the end of the Clone Wars has deeply affected Kanan, as expected. From a young age, he developped trust issues, and kept most people at arm's length if possible, cutting ties even with allies in his past, until he met Hera Syndulla and became crew to the Ghost. The Clone Wars also made Kanan develop a disdain for anything military. While he enjoys sticking it up to the Empire, he mentions to Syndulla that he would rather just be their crew then being part of a militarized group, where 'procedures and protocols' have to be followed instead of relying on nobler instincts. Nevertheless, Kanan chooses to stay with the Specters after they agree to give themselves the wisdom to 'choose not to fight'.
'How about a little less attitude and a little more altitude?' -Kanan Jarrus, Spark of Rebellion
As part of his defense mechanism to keep others at bay, Kanan can be snarky and a bit gruff at times. While he enjoys a good, witty banter between him and his team, he often uses sarcasm to cover his frustrations; or to provoke his enemies, as seen when the Grand Inquisitor tried to make him reveal details of a larger Rebellion when captured on the Sovereign. His witty quips are also at times the reason for getting into trouble, especially when Hera or Ezra aren't around to keep him under wraps (one because of respect, the other so he can lead by example).
Despite his snark, Kanan can actually be very charming, as shown by the many female conquests he had while on the run from the Empire. In the 'New Dawn' novel, Hera Syndulla reflects on how his pick-up lines were perhaps a bit cheesy, but relents that he has charisma, something he sometime uses to get out of sticky situations, before it escalates to violence.
'I know what it's like to lose someone close and not have anyone. When I lost my master, I was alone. Regardless of how this turns out, I didn't want you to be.' -Kanan Jarrus, Legacy
The biggest dichotomy to Kanan is the fact that while the Jedi tenants forbid him from forming emotional attachments, his departure from the Force for years on after the Jedi Purge allows him to balance his few real relationships. It's clear that the Specters are more than crew mates to him: they are the family he's never had. It shows numerous times, just by the number of rescue missions he's mounted to get them back, as well as how many times he's put himself in danger to keep them safe. But still, when face with the fact that his presence within the Rebellion puts the whole operation at risk because of his nature as a Jedi and being constantly hunted by the Inquisitor, Kanan is able to put aside his feelings for the Specters and walks away from them to trap the Inquisitors away from the Rebels' base, knowing it might lead to his doom. This shows once again that he loves them enough to let them go in order for them to save the Galaxy, and to stay alive.
'You're right, I can't protect Ezra forever. Not even from himself. All I can do is what I've done: train him the best I could.' -Kanan Jarrus, Shroud of Darkness
Finally, throughout the series, Kanan shows that he has the ability to grow and to change for the best. If he started as a roughneck drifter, trying not to get involved so he wouldn't pull the Empire's attention onto himself, he gains the maturity necessary to lead a larger Rebel cell that he would have ever imagined. Through his interactions with both heroes and villains in the series, he learns to admit his mistakes, to voice his worries and to let go of his fears and of circumstances he can not control. He learns to trust in the Force more than he has ever had before, and to trust in a few privileged individuals, as well as to believe people can change for the best.
His resilience in giving out his best in a fight, in giving out his wisdom when needed and to trust that others will do the same for him are part of why he was knighted, and makes him a great Jedi Master.
POWERS/ABILITIES: As a Jedi, Kanan is a Force-sensitive human, which grants him Force-talents. When trying to simplify it, there's generally two components to Force talents: the physical ones and empathetic ones. Feel free to choose however to nerf his powers!
Physical Talents:
Force-jump: Using the Force, Kanan can jump distances that would be deemed impossible for his specie.
Force-Push/Force-pull: Jedi have some telekinetic powers: they can push/pull/move around/hold in one place people or objects. The stronger the Jedi is, the bigger those objects/persons.
Empathetic:
Jedi mind trick: Kanan can influence the decisions of other people, as long as their mind are 'weaker' in the Force than his own
Jedi Vision: During meditation or through focusing, or when his mind is at peace, Kanan can receive visions from the Force, like when he foresaw the Jedi Purge moments before it actually happened. This ability is also what gives him extraordinary instincts, some sort of 'Jedi sense' a la Spiderman: Kanan can 'predict' things that are just about to happen, especially if they threaten his life. That talent is what makes him a good pilot, for example.
Force connection: Through the Force, a Jedi can connect to creatures of lower species, and even 'order' them around. A Jedi can also 'feel' other Force-sensitive people, or creature.
Kanan's other abilities also include a natural talent at swordsmanship and marksmanship. From a very young age, Kanan had always been very talented at wielding his lightsaber, and throughout his years of theft and smuggling, he's developed a good aim with his blaster. He prefers Form III, which is meant for close quarter combats and was the Form taught by his master Depa Billaba, but is versed well enough in Form V and Jar'kai (wielding two lightsabers at the same time).
